UniRail LLC was created in 1998 by R. Lawrence McCaffrey to pursue his interest in railroad restructurings, primarily in Latin America.

Mr. McCaffrey has dedicated his career to leadership and creativity in rail industry restructuring. During the 1970s, as the senior legal officer for railroads at the U.S. Department of Transportation, he participated in the formation of refinancing programs for railroad rehabilitation projects. In the 1980s, he led a private law practice representing buyers of more than US $1 billion in railroad properties being sold as part of the restructuring of the U.S. rail industry. He co-founded Anacostia & Pacific Company Inc. to participate in that restructuring, initially as an advisor and subsequently as a provider of equity capital and management.

During the 1990s, countries throughout the world moved to privatize their state-owned railroad systems, particularly in the freight sector. Mr. McCaffrey led Anacostia & Pacific's participation in such projects in South America, Africa, and New Zealand. In 1998 he formed UniRail LLC to take full advantage of the opportunities created by this dramatic change occurring in the industry worldwide.



Mr. McCaffrey has over 40 years of experience in the railroad industry as attorney, director and investor. He has participated as an investor in nine U.S. railroad acquisitions and three South American privatizations (Argentina, 1992; Chile, 1995; Bolivia, 1997). He is a member of the board of directors of three private railroads in the United States and Canada, and of a railroad contractor in Mexico.



UniRail is a specialized entrepreneurial company that offers a blend of transactional and technical advice and experience to the rail industry both in the United States and other countries.
